Mahatma Gandhi, that well known business guru, said:
"A customer is the most important visitor on our premises,
he is not dependent on us.
We are dependent on him.
He is not an interruption in our work. He is the purpose of it.
He is not an outsider in our business. He is part of it.
We are not doing him a favor by serving him.
He is doing us a favour by giving us an opportunity to do so."
Perhaps this should be part of the National Curriculum?

I really enjoyed this post too. The level of customer care in chains is shocking, in the main.

I will give a nod to Sainsbury's though. They are employing "sixth formers" on the tills, and despite the interminable wait for my alcohol purchases to be authorised, they generally make an effort to engage me in conversation with some sincerity.

And its not just recent. In my student days I was short changed by a fiver, which I didn't spot until I got home. I went back next day, explained my predicament, and they gave me a fiver without question. No third degree, no "too late sonny".

Of course, I've been using this ruse ever since when I have been short of beer money.

Excellent post. Could have been me describing my recent adventures buying a new telly. Ended up buying it from Mr Weston of Westons of Wirksworth. The chap must have been in his mid 70's but what he didn't know about LCDs/plasma etc and enjoyed sharing with the punter in plain English put the young knobs in John Lewis, Currys and Comet well in their place.

Actually what your town needs is a branch of this wonderful independent.
